A breakthrough photovoltaic (PV) technology designed by CHN Energy New Energy Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. for large-scale PV bases in desert, Gobi and barren areas has been certified as world-leading by the China Electric Power Construction Association. The achievement offers innovative solutions for developing mega PV power projects in harsh and arid environments.
The institute tackled key challenges in constructing PV bases in such regions—including difficulties in planning, limited cost-reduction potential, low construction efficiency, and a lack of practical application data—by driving technological advances across four dimensions: planning, equipment, construction and demonstration. The research team established a demonstration base and built a specialized database to evaluate PV performance under extreme conditions such as wide temperature swings and sand erosion. This enabled the development of a comprehensive lifetime benefit assessment method for new energy bases and a set of design standards tailored to PV stations in arid landscapes.
In terms of technical equipment, the team developed DC2000V power generation and grid integration technology with complete supporting equipment, introducing the world’s first IGBT hierarchical switching system for DC2000V applications. They also created high-voltage inverters with sand-proof and heat-dissipating features, steel-framed modules and integrated PV panels with four-edge fastening and plug-in connections. Through integrated combination and hoisting techniques, together with efficient modular assembly and smart construction, the system improves installation efficiency by 28% and significantly reduces costs.
This achievement has already been deployed in projects such as those in Otog Front Banner in Inner Mongolia and Jiayuguan in Gansu Province, delivering notable economic and social benefits.
