Recently, the Integrated High-Safety Intelligent Energy Storage Frequency Regulation System for Large Coal-Fired Units, developed by CHN Energy, was certified by the China Electricity Council as achieving internationally leading standards. This innovation delivers a breakthrough solution for frequency regulation needs of large coal-fired units across south China’s Guangdong province.
The technology integrates a lithium-ion battery energy storage system with optimized battery balancing and thermal management solutions, alongside a comprehensive auxiliary system integration and energy management platform. The project team established a triple-safeguard mechanism covering electrical protection, control logic, and intelligent operations and maintenance. This includes a DC-side collaborative protection architecture for the energy storage system, forming a multi-layered intelligent safety framework. By holistically evaluating market rules, unit characteristics and battery lifespan, the team developed an intelligent collaborative frequency regulation system that significantly enhances the comprehensive performance of power generation units while substantially boosting frequency regulation revenue.
This achievement advances research across three dimensions: technological refinement, scenario adaptation and industrial collaboration. It establishes an innovation pathway centered on “safety as the foundation, intelligence for efficiency, and synergy for expansion”. Building on existing breakthroughs in thermal-storage frequency regulation, the project addresses practical demands of such applications, providing critical technological support for high-quality energy development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
